“…It is a covenant of salt forever before the Lord unto thee and to thy seed with thee.”   – Numbers 18:19.

God made an unbreakable guarantee to Aaron and his descendants.  The promise, referred to as a covenant of salt, represented a seal of closeness and trust.

Binding with salt was never entered into haphazardly, but was worthy of reflection and respect.  Throughout antiquity, the sharing of salt has been a symbol of camaraderie and hospitality.

The Arabic expressions, “There is salt between us” and “He has eaten of my salt” signify the founding of an enduring bond.  Treaties were often formalized by the lick of salt.

Even temple offerings included salt.  Incense was “compounded according to the art of the perfumer, salted, pure and holy.” (Exodus 30:35)

Grain offerings also required the addition of salt.

“Every grain offering of yours, moreover, you shall season with salt, so that the salt of the covenant of your God shall not be lacking from your grain offering; with all your offerings you shall offer salt”. Leviticus 2:13
