Greetings from Claudia Procula to Fulvia Hersila of Rome.
My dear and faithful friend,
For quite some time you have been asking about the mysterious rumors that have reached you in Rome. Being overwrought with anxiety and concern, you have repeatedly begged me for an explanation. Giving heed to your tender request, I will gather together my scattered memories, doing my best to remember the events that have happened since our separation. However, should my story leave you shocked and bewildered, be mindful that the veil of heaven thwarts our earthly understanding. This divine force can overwhelm a life, and influence one’s fate.
As you recall, the swift passing of youth was spent under the protection of my parent’s roof. Then, in my sixteenth year, I was betrothed to the Roman Pilate. Although on the score of age he was old enough to be my father, he belonged to a renowned family (*1), and held an esteemed position in the Italian government.
Immediately after our marriage ceremony, I traveled with Pontius to his assigned post. Without joy, but also without hesitation, I began my new life. Oh Fulvia, I was so terribly lonely for you and the peaceful haven of my home. How I missed the grand monuments and beautiful groves of Narbonne (*2). So many tears were shed in my loneliness!
Our first years were tranquil, and time was divided between responsibilities and the pleasures permitted to women of my status. Eventually heaven bestowed upon me a great blessing; a precious son
